I have roved over the city these past years writing the occasional history of a neighbourhood in this newsletter; yet somehow, I have never yet written one of the area where I live. Leslieville began as a small village in the 1850s. It was named after George Leslie and sons who owned nurseries in the area and employed many of the area’s residents.

There is some debate over how to pronounce this area’s name. Is it “baby,” as in a very small human? Or “babby,” like “cabbie?” Well, it turns out it is neither —it is “Bawby,” as in the name Bobby said by someone from the southern United States. That is how James Baby’s surname was pronounced. But if you think that one is a bit tricky, how about Teiaiagon? This was the name of the Seneca village that sat on the same site long before James Baby ever laid eyes on the land.
